Bike Citizens Offering Intermodal Mobility Services

Traffic is one of today's major challenges, especially for cities and metropolises. As the growth of city regions is constantly increasing worldwide, smart, cost-efficient and eco-friendly solutions are wanted more than ever. This is where the bike, or more precisely bike sharing, as a means of transport comes into play.

Moving individual traffic away from the roads to more sustainable and environmentally friendly means transport options plays an important role and offers benefits for the public. Bike Citizens, ESNC regional winner 2012, represents an innovative bike sharing service, designed by bike couriers to cater for the needs of cyclists in cities. The bike app favours cycle paths and side streets and avoids busy main streets. It provides the best routing across the city to make cycling even more comfortable and fun - discover the city from a new perspective.

During a first test phase, public bike-sharing schemes were integrated into the Bike Citizens app in more than 350 cities worldwide. This initiative is part of the EU-funded ODUN BIKES project. The European Union's Horizon 2020 budget for the EU-funded ODUN BIKES project (Open Data Upgraded Navigation for Bike Sharing). Horizon 2020 constitutes the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever. Thereby, it targets more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.

A so called "walk-ride-walk" mode is one of the newest features of the Bike Citizens App. This feature displays the shortest route to the closest by bike station in the area, show how many bikes are available and the optimal route using the bike. As soon as one has arrived at the desired destination, the app shows the closest drop-off station for the bike. All available bike sharing schemes in participating cities are shown as points of interest within the Bike Citizen app. The "walk-ride-walk" routing option can also be tested without using the app with a few clicks on the Bike Citizens website.
