Digital Spaces Living Lab (DSLL), Bulgaria (Focus :: Media)

Profile Focus Topic Services

Digital spaces are digital, virtual, or computer-generated worlds - but also the spaces in which we live and use digital media, digital communication devices, digital gadgets, etc. The Digital Spaces Living Lab (DSLL) in Sofia, Bulgaria, was founded in 2008 to support industrial and academic partners working in the field of new digital media technologies and location-based services (LBS). DSLL provides a creative environment for research and innovation, as well as new forms of direct user involvement in the innovation process. Since 2008, DSLL has been an active member of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL). DSLL has taken part in many research, innovation, and industrial projects - some of them in cooperation with partners in Europe and elsewhere - and has organised numerous workshops in the last four years. In the beginning of 2012, a new section of DSLL called KidsLab@DSLL was created, which focuses on interactive ICT and digital media education and games for children.

Focus Topic

The main focus of DSLL is on digital media services and technologies, as well as LBS. Recently, DSLL was selected from among a number of ENoLL facilities to conduct a reality check trial on the Geo-Coupon concept and iPhone app (which won the special Living Lab prize in last year's European Satellite Navigation Competition) in Sofia from February to August 2012. This year, DSLL is again looking for great new ideas on how to use various location-based services to explore and experience the digital spaces around us that are filled with user-generated digital content. The facility is particularly interested in mobile services, including image and video search and sharing (with location-based elements), projects that explore novel aspects of the Internet of Things (IoT), and networks of connected (interactive) information displays.

The DSSL Partnership comprises many companies from different countries and fields of expertise, including interactive and attentive displays; human-computer interaction (HCI); usability; information sharing and curation; image search, analysis and image processing in the cloud; multimedia and semantic technologies; mapping and LBS; and e-publishing. DSLL seeks to find synergies among these technologies and enable its members and other organisations to use them to create novel services. For example, DSLL has developed its own integrated LBS service, which currently integrates content from Clusttour/Flickr, Instagram, StockPodium, and Twitter. This service can be used either as a city exploration service or an activity visualisation platform for Living Labs and other organisations with complex and distributed operational structures. Meanwhile, DSLL can offer a number of its members' services and other platforms to test the feasibility of winning ideas from the GNSS Living Lab prize competition.
