Profile

Espaitec is the scientific, technology, and business park of Jaume I University (UJI) in Castellón, Spain. Promoted by the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) and the Castellón Confederation of Entrepreneurs (CEC), espaitec was set up in 2007 for the purpose of making quantitative and recognised contributions to both socio-economic development in the province of Castellón and the diversification of its industrial fabric. espaitec thus seeks to create a reference environment in Castellón that hosts, supports, and encourages innovative business initiatives to grow and facilitates active technology transfer at the University. In addition to working in a network along with the Spanish Association of Science and Technology Parks (APTE), espaitec serves as a member of the International Association of Scientific Parks (IASP), the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL), and the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) and as an important agent of promoting innovation and enterprise in the province of Castellón. Its new infrastructures are located in a single knowledge-based enclave, some of the activities of which are highlighted below:

  • Supporting talent and entrepreneurship
  • Accompanying and driving business growth
  • Providing specialised innovation-support services
  • Establishing connections to the global innovation system
  • Offering support and soft landings for internationalisation
  • Driving territorial integration
In essence, espaitec is a park that aims to generate wealth, jobs, and prosperity by creating an economic and business model that goes beyond former attempts. It is now home to more than 65 firms and has generated more than 450 highly qualified jobs, including those of its own staff members and other parties.

In 2010, espaitec set up the e'LivingLab ecosystem on the Riu Sec campus of the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón (UJI). The objective was to convert the current location into a Smart Campus - a place where technologically advanced products are made available to the university community, thus enabling its members to join in each initiative and generate information needed to improve quality of life in greater society. In this context, e'LivingLab is providing diverse scenarios in which companies linked (physically or virtually) to espaitec can collaborate on designing, developing, and testing their products in the most realistic environment possible.

The first phase of this project, which focused on the UJI Smart Campus itself, was completed in 2013. The phases scheduled to start from the campus will now commence to reinforce the Smart City of Castellón, or to create a Smart Province through the e-rurallab concept. Focus Topic

espaitec's e'LivingLab is an open scenario capable of hosting different technologies. With the support of the entire university community (close to 15,000 students and 2,000 researchers and other staff), the Smart Campus's testing facility helps develop new products in an endless range of knowledge areas (technological, social, etc).

Services

The winner of this prize will be invited to join the espaitec incubator for one year to develop the winning idea. Membership will include access to a testing environment, the facility's Project Management Office, experts, and a high-speed network. Thanks to espaitec's leading role in this innovation ecosystem, it will be able to promote the idea's development by supporting collaborative projects with other SMEs located at the park.
